Spotting a Scam

The Warning Signs of an Investment Scam, Before You Pay

Most investment scams follow a recognisable pattern. This guide sets out the warning signs that recur across almost every case, in the order an investor usually meets them.

How the First Contact Was Made

A genuine investment firm rarely makes first contact through a cold call, a WhatsApp or Telegram message, or an invitation to join a group promising trading signals. If the approach was unsolicited, everything that follows deserves more scrutiny, not less.

A Return Higher Than the Market Supports

A return noticeably higher than comparable, established products offer is one of the clearest warning signs there is. Fraud relies on an attractive rate to override caution, whereas a genuine return is limited by what the market can actually pay.

Pressure Presented as Opportunity

A deadline, a limited allocation or a rate said to close today are pressure tactics, not genuine scarcity. A firm with a genuine product has no reason to stop you taking the time to verify the offer.

Where the Money Is Actually Going

This detail matters more than any other. Your own bank's Confirmation of Payee check should confirm that the account you are asked to pay belongs to the exact company you believe you are dealing with. An account in a different name, a personal account, or one your bank cannot confirm is the strongest warning sign you are likely to see, however convincing everything else appears.

Remote Access and Fees to Withdraw

A request to install remote access software such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer is a serious warning sign on its own. So is being told that a tax, fee or deposit must be paid before money you already hold can be withdrawn.

How MetaAshes Examines This

A MetaAshes assessment cross-references a firm's details against the official record in a single pass. For this question, the most relevant checks include:

  • Payee name verification
  • FCA Warning List screening
  • Domain registration age
  • Remote access requests

Frequently Asked

I have already sent money. What should I do?

Contact your bank immediately and explain that fraud may be involved, then report it to Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud) on 0300 123 2040 and to the FCA. Treat any later offer to recover the money for a fee with particular suspicion, because that is a well-documented scam in its own right.

Can a fraudulent firm still look professional?

Yes. A polished website, a plausible reference number and confident staff are all easy to produce. None of them shows who actually controls the bank account you are asked to pay, which is why that detail matters more than how professional the firm appears.
