How to Check a Phone Number Before You Trust the Caller

A telephone number is one of the easiest details for a fraudster to choose, and the number on your screen may not belong to the person calling. Several firms added to the FCA Warning List in October 2026 paired a UK address with a number in North America.

The Number on Your Screen May Not Be the Caller's Own

Most of us answer a call more readily when it shows a familiar UK number, and fraudsters know as much. A caller can arrange for a call to display a number that is not their own, which is why Stop Scams UK points out that its 159 service, unlike many ordinary telephone numbers, cannot be spoofed or impersonated.

A number on your screen, however familiar, tells you only what the caller has chosen to display. The same is true of a number printed on a website, a letter or an email: the firm chose to put it there, and a fraudulent firm can choose any number it likes.

What the Number Itself Can Tell You

The number can still be informative when you look at it closely. UK mobile numbers begin 07, and an investment firm that offers only a mobile number as its main line is unusual. A number beginning +1 belongs to the United States, Canada or parts of the Caribbean.

In October 2026 the FCA added CFXTRADE to its Warning List with an address in Altrincham, Cheshire, and a telephone number beginning +1 702. Fx Quantix Option gave an address at County Hall in London alongside a number beginning +1 562. A genuine business can have reasons for an overseas line, but a UK address paired with a North American number is a question the firm should be able to answer.

Call Back on a Number You Have Found Yourself

For an authorised firm, the FCA Register lists the telephone number the firm has given the FCA, and the FCA's own advice is to contact a firm using the details on its Firm Checker rather than the details you were given. End the call, find the firm on the Register, and ring the number shown there yourself.

If the caller says they are from your bank, you can call 159, which Stop Scams UK says connects customers of more than 99% of the UK's retail bank current accounts directly with their bank.

A Number Counts Only When the Other Details Agree

A telephone number that matches the Register is reassuring, but it remains one detail among several. The website, the email address, the postal address and, above all, the account you are asked to pay should belong to the same firm.

Before you transfer money, use your bank's Confirmation of Payee check to confirm that the account is held in the exact name of the firm you found on the Register. If an approach worries you, report it to the FCA on 0800 111 6768.

How MetaAshes Examines This

A MetaAshes assessment cross-references a firm's details against the official record in a single pass. For this question, the most relevant checks include:

  • Official telephone number on record
  • Telephone number allocation
  • Method of first contact
  • Official website on record
  • Email domain consistency
  • FCA Warning List screening
  • Payee name verification

Frequently Asked

Can a caller make their call show a genuine number?

Yes. A call can be made to display a number that does not belong to the caller, so a familiar number on your screen does not confirm who is calling.

Where can I find a firm's genuine telephone number?

For an authorised firm, the FCA Register lists the telephone number the firm has given the FCA. Ring that number yourself rather than one given to you in a call, email or letter.

Can MetaAshes check a telephone number?

Yes. An assessment compares the number you were given with the firm's official record and checks how the number is allocated, for example whether it is a mobile number.
